Fake recruiters have hit Linkedin and are sending messages in an attempt to scam people who are desperately looking for work. These guys are pretty elaborate in setting up a platform to look as real as possible. So, unless you pay attention to the tiniest details; You could potentially divulge personal information without realizing it.

To Job Seekers: Be Careful

  • At the end of the day, if you didn’t speak to someone live; it’s not real. If you did speak to someone live, make sure you can clearly understand them. Don’t let them rush the conversation.
  • Notice the extensions .com vs .co and y.com vs x-y.com. They are not the same.
  • People should be verifiable somewhere. If you can’t google them, something is wrong already.
  • Never give personal information before you’re actually hired.
  • Don’t buy anything or spend any money. You do not need to spend money to earn money when you work for someone hourly or salary.

& Hang In There!!!!!

You’re not alone and you’re not dead! I understand you could be in the direst situation because of these scammers, but they are not worth your life. There are resources to help if you’re having bad thoughts (911, shelterapp.org, headspace.com). Let it out by going for a run or something. Take a moment. Feel it. Now crumple it up and begin again.

Case 1 — HERO DIGITAL HAD IMPOSTERS

Screen capture of Hero Digital employee Kelley Young that was used by the scammers

I received an e-mail message to interview, from what I thought was the lady displayed above, Kelley Young. I was instructed to download the wire app and that she will be conducting the initial interview there. She set a specific date and time, like any other interview. I did my checks and found her and the company and remember I did reach out to them at one point in my job search. So I thought this was legitimate. Unorthodox, but at the very least, legitimate.

The chat went smoothly and she asked typical HR questions. Sometimes responses took a minute to come through. Their responses sound like they like…
